Langar
About Langar
Langar (free food) is an integral part of Sikhism to promote the principles of equality, humility, and service to others. It is prepared in community kitchen and served by volunteers also known as sevadars to all visitors, regardless of their background, religion, caste, or social status. It symbolises the Sikh concept of sewa or selfless service, and helps foster a sense of community and equality among all people.
Volunteers gather in the gurdwara’s kitchen to cook the meal. The food is prepared with love and devotion, and often in large quantities to accommodate the needs of all attendees. Once the meal is ready, it is served to all visitors. Everyone sits together on the floor in Pangat (rows) symbolizing equality and humility.
After the meal, volunteers and visitors often help with cleaning up the langar hall, utensils and kitchen. This aspect of langar emphasizes the importance of selfless service and humility in Sikhism.
